This is more a cautionary tale than a photo tip/hint as such. But one that has hit me hard on more than one occasion.

I spent two days in Devon recently and the light was dull, grey, uninspiring, flat, yuk  – you get the picture. On my way home, and as I travelled along the M5, I happened to glance in my rear view mirror to see what looked like a glorious sunset building up. No sun, just orange and pink drama in the clouds behind me. Unplanned and unanticipated. To quote Richard Fox, a colleague of mine from Dartmoor, “Where did THAT come from?”

Fortunately I was able to hurtle into the Taunton Deane Services car park and dive headlong into the boot for the camera.

It would have been SO easy to have simply left the thing at home and travelled light but I have been in this situation before and armed to the teeth with body and lenses, I leaped (leapt?) out of the car and fired off a few shots.

I vowed there and then to NEVER (EVER) leave the kit behind – it will happen but not for want of effort.

The results are never going to win any prizes but the sight was absolutely mesmerising and I am just so glad to have caught this fabulous natural display.

Never again will you hear me say…..

Never again will I hear YOU say,,,?
