Just back from leading two back to back photo workshops in the Plitvice National Park, Croatia. I have to admit I had not heard of Plitvice until I started leading trips for www.tatraphotographyworkshop.com but I sure have now. This is a great location. Sadly it is on the world tourism trail as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But, with patience, you can get some wonderful photography done here. And we did. Both groups had a great time and the weather held good for the whole week we were there.

If you love photographing lakes and waterfalls just check this place out – you will be so glad you did.

Sure there were some squalls, and some good hail downpours too, but we all pitched in and a great time was had by all. Ever since I started coming to the Scillies I have never tired of them. Very friendly people, unbelievable light for photography (painters love it here too) and big, sweeping landscapes.

I have planned for my next workshop here in April 2013. Check this place out and, for some incredible photography opportunities, join me? It would be rude not to!

This coming Easter week sees me leading a Brecon Beacons Photo workshop – based at Talybont on Usk. Fingers crossed for ‘useable’ weather! Then, after that, I am leading my annual photo pilgrimage to the glorious Isles of Scilly with six lucky clients. I work very hard on these breaks to ensure that my guests get the very best help and advice I can offer. There is also a disproportionate amount of jokes of dubious provenance – so the breaks are fun . Why not check out the courses on the site? I will be considering Northumberland and Cornwall as possible venues for this autumn – would love to hear from you if interested.

What a great week! Leading a photography workshop with Tatra Photography Workshops seeking out the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Snow, ice, fog. blue sky, sunshine. Yes, this was Iceland. We got by on the minimum of sleep and were out seeking and searching. The results from the guests were truly astonishing. Shooting was from around 11pm to maybe 3, 4 or 5am. Some superb locations helped too. It certainly was hard work but it was also so rewarding. An opportunity that just could not be missed. Oh, and the other aspects of Iceland photography were good too!

What a great day we had yesterday. I met my guests at Talybont on Usk in the Brecon Beacons for our workshop and off we set for a day of photo technique, composition and even a coffee break in the middle! A lot of the snow had disappeared from last week but there was still enough just to lift some of the landscapes we experimented with. Blue skies, white clouds and a happy bunch of photographers. We even did some experimental stuff, by vertically panning with pine trees – a technique I love to play with.
Now I need to get some more workshop days set up…

Interesting day last Wednesday. I was asked to take a set of shots to illustrate the upgrading of a 33/11kV electricity substation. I used to work for an electricity undertaking so had some idea of what to expect. A great day with a break in the weather – blue sky and sunshine. One happy client and so many photos of a transformer, men working up poles and on the ground and shots of the whole substation site. This kind of photography has an edge to it. Not soft or romantic or picturesque certainly, but nonetheless challenging to do well. And, of course, I need to check for details such as wearing protective gear correctly etc! Great fun…
